![]() Winnebago County Reports Increase in Pertussis cases On Wednesday, May 19th, Winnebago County Health Department (WCHD) reported that there has been a pertussis outbreak (whooping cough). Pertussis is a vaccine preventable disease with symptoms starting similar to a cold with a runny nose, mild cough, mild fever, progressing to severe spasms of coughing that interfere with drinking, eating and breathing. The cough has the characteristic high-pitched "whoop". Coughing attacks occur more frequently at night and can last for several weeks. This bacteria is spread through person to person from direct contact with respiratory droplets (i.e. sneezing, coughing) from an infected person, or, can be spread by touching the fluid and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
